Vanessa Thorne began as the JV coach for Pomfret Girls Crew in 2003. In 2008, Thorne worked with two exceptional crews: first boat included Felice Mueller '08, Kelsey Webster '08, Verena Lehner '08, Katie Kramer '09, and Kirsten Therrian '10. Second boat included Meredith Colwell '08, Emma Pellerin '08, Laura Alves '10, Jaclyn Tules '11, and Emily Warne '10. The first boat's goal in 2008 was to take gold at New England; this goal eluded them by one second?! It was under Vanessa Thorne's leadership that the crew team transitioned from a team with a cage for a boathouse, to a team that won three consecutive du Pont Cups, three New England medals, and qualified for Nationals each of those years, ultimately winning a silver medal.
Thorne has been coaching for thirteen years. She began rowing at age 8 as her father, Brian Thorne, was on the Canadian National Team for twelve years, winning a bronze and silver at the World Championships as a Canadian Lightweight Rower and won gold at the Pan American Games. Rowing for St. Catharines Rowing Club, she was the 1994 Canadian Youth Sculler of the Year, St. Catharines 2005 Senior Rower, and has won several gold medals at the Royal Canadian Henley, including one in 2005. She coached at Youth Rowing School from 1994 until 2005, was an Ontario Provincial Coach in 2000 and 2001, and has also coached at Dennis Morris School, Holy Cross High School, and Ridley College, where crews won two silvers and a bronze at the Canadian Schoolboys, and at the Ridley Grad Boat Club where crews won four Royal Canadian Henley gold medals. |
