AWAY Gunnery for Founders Day
AWAY Gunnery for Founders Day
With a blazing reddish-orange sunrise in our rear view mirror at 6 in the morning, we trekked two hours to western Connecticut on May 3rd. The top three boats for both the boys and girls crew teams travelled together to the Gunnery for an all-day regatta. In its 56th year, the Founders Cup is a large-scale regatta that attracts dozens of schools and club teams from New England. Everything was bigger at Founders - - even the Newfoundland dogs! (see below) The morning races are designed to see which boats can earn a qualifying time to compete in the petite finals and the grand finals. The fact that both the first and second boats qualified for the petite finals is a source of pride and accomplishment for the girls team. The Results have been taken from the Row2K website and pasted below. Coach Wells, Hudson, and Pablo are all proud of the girls' performance at Founders and we wish to extend a particular salute to Coach Ring, Coach Rossolimo, Mr. Martin and all parent MVPs (Trivellas, Schroders, Youngmans, & Hare) who handled so many logistics behind the scenes. Thank you for your support and dedicated effort. We are grateful for your contributions up to and including that 15 hour commitment.
Highlights from V1: Evans
Line-Up - Stroke Tory Read, Emily Buell, Lucy Richards, Molly Schroder. Coxie: Sofie Melian Morse
This boat qualified for the petites by capturing 4th place in their first heat. Beating Taft in this round was especially satisfying since they beat us by one second last time we raced. After waiting for 4 hours until their petite finals race, the girls dug deep and pulled off the race of the season as far as I'm concerned. In a competitive field of schools, their assertive start secured first place for the first 250 meters of the course! Impressive! They dropped to second place but held second and fought back from third for over 700 meters of the race. By the finish line, they inched back to 4th place, but rowed their fastest, cleanest, and most responsive race yet!
Highlights from the V2: Castle
Line-Up - Stroke Rosemary Osborne, Julie Sullivan, Charlotte Apuzzo, Abi Trivella. Coxie: Abby McThomas
This boat also qualified for the petites by capturing 4th place in their first heat. They punched the first half of the race and were dancing within the top three of the race. While other boats made moves to put Pomfret in 4th, the Castle held a strong 4th with lots of open water between them and Northampton. After waiting for 4 hours until their petite finals race, the girls rallied their spirits and energy to make the wait worthwhile. They got off the line cleanly and in a dominant position. As I rode my bike along the course, a giant mansion obstructed my view of the Castle when Julie Sullivan caught a boat-stopping crab around the 200 meter mark. This halt to their momentum was significant but their recovery was the more impressive part, earning the accolades of the Taft crew when they arrived at the dock. The crab put this boat in 6th place for the petite race but despite the last place finish, they still rowed 2 seconds faster than their first round race!? Catching the crab incentivized this boat to motor in the second half of the race!
Highlights from the V3: Cole
Line Up: Stroke - Kelly McCarthy, Michelle Nivar, Kailey Castle, Chloe Cheng. Coxie: Sofie Melian Morse
This boat got off the line but the set and the checking of the boat created too much resistance on the water to earn a qualifying time. Pomfret trailed by open water through much of the race and couldn't rally the timing or the strength to make up for it. Given a new line-up and novice rowers, it was still a worthy showing and experience for this crew. We're glad they could taste a larger scale regatta.

NEIRA RESULTS 2015
It was a beautiful day for the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association Championships. The top two boats on the Pomfret Girls Crew team qualified for NEIRA after very successful racing against Middlesex on our home lake one week ago. To get to this level of racing….to even be invited... our V1 and V2 boats had to be faster than 8 other crews in our league - and we were! An accomplishment in and of itself. Going into NEIRA, our V1 boat was seeded 14th out of 20 crews and our V2 was ranked 18th out of 20 crews.
V2: Castle
Line-Up: Stroke -Rosemary Osborne, Julie Sullivan, Charlotte Apuzzo, Abi Trivella
Coxie - Abby McThomas
The V2 boat launched first and raced in the morning. Despite an abrupt start and an outside lane, they managed to stay neck and neck with neighboring Hopkins. The Castle came within reliable binocular visibility at roughly the 750 meter mark. At that point, Pomfret was holding both Hopkins and Nobles off. It was becoming a fight for 4th place. With less than 250 meters to go, Pomfret could not hold off Hopkins but was successfully able to hold off Nobles. The Nobles sprint was assertive and swift but this crew refused to be last and finished 4 seconds ahead of Nobles to secure 5th place. Although Taft was not in our heat, the satisfaction that comes with beating Taft by 1 second allows this V2 crew to walk away with the last word. Pomfret and Taft have been battling one another all season - back and forth, back and forth. Seeing them for the fourth time, its good to know we ended the season, besting Taft by one second in this maddening pursuit of inches. This second boat crew was also faster than Nobles and Miss Porters School, allowing them to move up in the rankings. These 5 girls raced well, raced hard and ended the day 17th out of 20 crews.
V1: Evans
Line-Up: Stroke - Tory Read, Emily Buell, Lucy Richards, Molly Schroder
Coxie - Sofie Melian Morse
The V1 boat launched second and raced in the afternoon. This crew knew that the tailwind would play to Tory's strength for higher rates. If they could achieve a smooth set and respond to their coxie's power 5s, they could contend with the likes of Choate and with Cambridge Rindge and Latin School.. Both power and technique clicked for this crew during their first 20 strokes off the starting line. However, once the Evans crew settled to their race pace, the technique lagged. With starboard oars skidding the water and Molly's miniature crab, the momentum down the stretch switched from being a fight for 4th or 5th place and into a fight for time. By halfway, the new goal became closing the gap of open water between Pomfret and the 5 crews surging ahead. When CRLS pulled away, our sprint didn't match the tempo of the other crews and we were running out of lake to make up for lost water. This crew walked away with a slower time than anyone expected. The bewilderment of the day is how could this Pomfret crew lose by 20 seconds to Middlesex after this crew beat that same Middlesex boat by 4 seconds one week earlier? Whatever variable we choose to explore, this race wasn't their best, finishing 19th out of 19 crews.
Regardless of outcome, the gift of today (for both crews!) was just being there! To compete at the highest level, race down a fully buoyed course, rub elbows with the fastest crews in New England, and cheer on the Pomfret boys crew - - all of that was worth the experience. After this season with limited water time, we have much to be thankful for and many folks to recognize. Supportive and resourceful parents rank highest on that list. You know who you are! Thank you for your patience, good cheer, and reliable help. Thanks to the Watkins' for making the drive to Worcester to document and support both crews at NEIRA. Continued thanks to Coach Rossolimo, Coach Ring, Mr. Martin, and Mr. Sheehan for coordinating many of logistics for our travel days. Thanks to Coach Hudson and Pablo for their work with the JV boats. Happy Birthday to Mrs. Richards. Shout out to Pomfret alum and former rower Mae Hanson who made an appearance and brought dual loyalty to both Pomfret and Hopkins today. And a special thank you to every rower or coxswain on the Pomfret girls crew team. The sport can be demanding but you have all had a chance to experience the joy of rowing well - occasionally even racing well - and thats the elixir that can get inside you in a good way. The fact that 15 out of 24 girls earned a PR on the last 2K erg test of the season suggests that our greatest source of pride as a team should be our swift improvement in a short span of time.
In the words of Kierkegaard, "Life is best understood backward, but it must be lived forward" - - thank goodness that in this sport, we get to race forward while still looking backward. The entire team has left a good wake behind them this spring and we'll look forward to the 2016 season ahead!
