COACHES
Head Coach Liz Sangree
Elizabeth Sangree is excited to be the new head coach for Pomfret Girl’s Crew in the spring of 2016! Coach Sangree has extensive experience in the rowing world, going all the way back to 2008, when she first began rowing at the Taft School in Watertown, CT. While there, she earned the Golden Hammer Award for her record-breaking 2k time, which still stands. In addition, her boat won the petite finals of the NEIRA Championships on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA, and competed in such races as the Founder’s Day Regatta and the DuPont cup (right on Pomfret’s home ground!). She went on from the Taft rowing team to the Bates College varsity women’s rowing program, currently ranked first in the nation for Division III, where she rowed starboard in the first boat for four years. In those years, she competed in the NCAA Division III championships each spring, won the spring ECAC Championships, and won the Head of the Charles Regatta on the Charles River in Boston in the fall of 2014. With nine years of experience, Coach Sangree is well-versed in the hard work, dedication, beauty, and, most importantly, the fun of rowing, and cannot wait to take the helm of the Pomfret girl’s program!
Assistant Coach Katie Wells
Katie holds a BA from Bowdoin College and a Masters degree from the University of Virginia. She has taught at Charlotte Country Day School from 2010-2013 and began teaching at Pomfret School in 2013. Katie rowed port under Coach Gil Birney at Bowdoin College, competing in the varsity four boat at the Head of the Charles and Dad Vail Regattas. Katie teaches AP US History and Modern World History at Pomfret School and lives in Girls Bricks with her wife, Katy Field who is pursuing her doctoral degree at the University of Connecticut. She attended the JR Rowing Coaches Conference in Saratoga Springs in Feb 2014 and the Craftsbury Sculling Clinic in August 2014.
